The NY Times TV critic did a real-time blog from the Upfronts. Here's what she said as they were going on:

"The Winner," a "Raymond" plus "Two and a Half Men" sitcom, looks like a bust. Rob Corddry stars. One of those previews that leads you to believe there really can never, ever be a good sitcom again if something like this is getting greenlighted.

Now Garrett's doing stand-up. He's joking about Paula Abdul being a mental patient. Then he says he's having sex with Ryan Seacrest. It's dark and desperate and people inexplicably are going for it.

"Vanished," by contrast, looks OK. It gets "Prison Break" as a lead-in on Monday night, and the block might work. Moonves is right: we're in the golden age of television drama.

On IMDB, somebody posted this:

"I went. I am not lying when I say Vanished was the best thing in a long and deadly dull presentation, despite Rockette-style dancers, a live band and the American Idol judges. They showed so many clips they practically spoiled the entire pilot for the audience (except the very end). Gale was there (clean-shaven, white shirt/dark suit) as was Ming Na and Rebecca Gayheart. I am very optimistic about the show's chances and the people I spoke to afterwards agreed.

Overall, the Fox upfront was one of the worst sales presentations I have ever seen in any industry. Bombs aplenty. I hope the show doesn't suffer bad initial press because of that "guilt by association". The people I spoke to who liked what we saw of "Vanished" (which was a bit too much -- all the excerpts were overlong) were overwhelmingly female, for what it's worth, and not media but advertising folks."

I asked “Is there some reason you think the women might react more positively? Was there a lot of Gale?” She replied:

"Yes. He is the star, after all, and is in pretty much every scene. Problem was the clips needed to be edited down a bit as they were too long, and in the case of "Vanished", kind of threw an awful lot of data at a very physically uncomfortable audience. The Fox brass and the comedians doing the presentation did their utmost to put people to sleep before the clips were shown, unfortunately."

Someone else asked: “Someone told me that it was visually stunning, like a film. Which is natural since Mimi directed it, but was it?” She replied:

"I would not have said "stunning", but it was definitely on the "24" level."
