It seems like forever since I posted anything on here, but while I have a little extra time I thought I would write just a bit about my experiences seeing Randy in Cabaret. Yes, experiences, plural, because I was one of the lucky ones who discovered he was coming to my hometown! I live 20 minutes' driving time from downtown, so I was ecstatic to find out Cabaret was coming to Cincinnati in May!
I promptly invited three of my friends to travel here and stay with me (well, two of them did, anyway), and that was just as much fun as seeing the actual play.
My friends and I had tickets for three different performances: Opening Night here on Tuesday, May 10, Sunday, May 15, and then on the last day, Sunday, May 22.
Opening night I went with my friend Deborah. We had second-row seats, so the view was fabulous. Since the cast in Cabaret is literally also the orchestra, there was no need for musicians or and orchestra pit, so we were very close.
Cabaret Frame 05.10
The unusual thing about this play is that while I am used to an announcement being made about 'no photography, recording, turn off your cellphones, etc., etc.,' for this play there IS no opening announcement. The girls in the cast come out first before the show actually begins to 'warm up' (and they are NOT modest, either, about it - ha!), but very limber, shall we say. (wink, wink).
Then, after a while some of the 'boys' come out, either warming up on their musical instruments or just kind of hanging around, having a smoke.
It isn't long, however, before Randy makes his presence known, and from the moment he does, you can't help having your attention riveted on him. The first inkling you see of him is when a slot (kind of like a rectangular-sized peephole) opens up in middle stage drop door at the rear, and you see a pair of eyes staring out at you - Randy's. Then the beginning theme of "Wilkommen" starts, and he comes out on stage to start singing the opening number. He initially has on a sort of trench coat, but then soon sheds it, opens the middle door, and throws it inside. He proceeds then to introduce the girls separately, and then the boys (and the ways he tells them apart is very humorous, too, mainly by their anatomical differences.
He is then decked out in the familiar suspenders I'm sure you have all seen. I won't get into all the details of the play, as I know others have already done that. But from the moment he arrives on stage, you can't help watching his every move. He is so commanding in this part: playful, sinister, sexy, even crude at times. But very, very confident in his performance. And the voice. Wow. Strong, powerful, and clear.
At the beginning of the second act is when he picks out a man and a woman to dance briefly with him. During the second time I went to see the play, though, apparently Randy couldn't find a man (at least not one under 70 - ha!) to dance with, so he only had a woman dance with him. He must vary dancing with them onstage, or dancing with them in the audience, because he actually walked right by my friend Dee Dee and I to go pick out a man from the audience about five rows behind us, and proceeded to literally dance with him in the aisle (to the delight of his boyfriend sitting right next to him!).
When Randy is not singing and/or dancing, he is still normally in sight. He spends some time behind the stage, but is often up on the catwalk, watching and/or listening in to what others are saying below. He also sings the ballad he had mentioned is one of his favorites from up on the catwalk ("I Don't Care Much,") in between the square-shaped frame on the stage, dressed in the sparkly, black, sequined dress and earrings that he posted on Instagram a few months ago before the show actually began. His voice is haunting, but also so beautiful in that number.
I would say that Randy is on stage probably 85% of the time during the show, which is approximately 2 1/4 hours long.
The first night (Opening Night), he DID come out to greet his fans, along with several other members of the cast, and I took a photo of him with Deborah that I believe she has since posted (lucky girl!). I spoke briefly with him, but having just seen him the weekend before with the Skivvies and having my photo taken then, I was content just to snap a couple of photos of him with some other fans by the stage door. The other two times that I went to see the show was on a Sunday afternoon, so I really did not expect him to come out, since he would have two shows that day. My friend Shannon and I DID wait at the stage door for a while when we went on May 15, but no Randy. Was not surprised, though, and when my friend Dee Dee and I went on May 22, we didn't even try. I thnk he once said it took him maybe two hours to get ready makeup wise (?), so I did not expect him to come out. Some of the other cast did come out, however and were very nice. My friend Shannon and I spoke with Leeds Hill on May 15, and he DID confirm that he will be the stand-in for Randy while he is in Toronto. He was super friendly, and Shannon got a photo with him (why didn't I think of that???). All I managed to do, though, was drop the $20 Cabaret mug I had just broken onto the ground and break it. (ouch!).
I did manage to get just a quick shot at the end of the third performance of the cast taking a closing bow.
Randy Curtain Call
But if you get a chance to see this play, do not hesitate! Randy seems to almost glow in this role, and all the accolades being heaped upon him are well-deserved. The rest of the cast is top-notch, too. Not to mention hearing a full orchestra/cast playing a rousing rendition of "Life is a Cabaret" at the beginning of the second act. If you go see this, you will NOT be disappointed. I hope I will perhaps get one more chance to see it before Randy stops performing in it. He has hinted he may stay on longer than he had first thought, so I'm crossing my fingers.
I think one of my favorite parts is when Randy comes up with six (?) other girls doing a sort of 'can can' number in drag, complete with black wig, hose, and a short black outfit (not sure what it would be called). The funny thing is, the first time I saw the play I wasn't even aware he was in that number - ha! The second and third time, though, I knew it, and it was easy to tell which one he was by the tattoo on his arm. But he fit in with the rest of the 'girls' perfectly! Plus, it was an obvious giveaway when he gave the audience a big grin and a wink afterward.
What else can I say? He is amazing in this role, and I hope it gets him the attention he deserves.
On another note, looking forward to seeing many of you in Toronto soon, old friends and those I have yet to meet in person. I have already met Dee Dee before the con for the first time, and had a wonderful time with her, Deborah, and Shannon, all of whom I have met through QAF. I am so lucky to have met all of you! Thanks for reading.
